Säckpipa (swedish bagpipes)

The Swedish bagpipe on the left was made by Leif Eriksson, Insjön (Province of Dalarna). Leif was the first to make bagpipes in series (He has made well over 600 by now!) and without his pioneering and driving efforts the instrument would have been as forgotten as 30 years ago. His instruments are adapted reconstructions of bagpipes played in western Dalarna only about 100 years ago. In fact the last bagpiper who belonged to the bagpipe tradition died 1947.

A typical Swedish bagpipe has single reeds in both chanter and drone and is mouth blown. Leif also makes other instruments: violins, liras and nyckelharpas. Visit his home page here.
